OPEN PORT CLUB Mix Series – King Coya

Here is the 4th mix of OPEN PORT CLUB monthly mix series featuring an artist seleced from each continent.
The mix of the month feature King Coya, the music project fusing Latin American folklore with electronic music produced by Gaby Kerpel from Buenos Aires, Argentina in South America. Hope you enjoy!
Q1. How and where was the mix recorded? Could you tell us about the idea behind the mix?
The mixtape is specially made, it is not a recorded mix. The idea is to show some how my influences, mixed and mushed up with my music, also other artists from other regions like Peru and Ecuador I mostly included tracks from my latest release "Tierra de King Coya" as well as La Yegros (King Coya's production) and some remixes I did last year.
Q2. Could you tell us about yourself and your musical background?
I like the idea of Folk Music for the dance floor, it is a challenge to mix folk rhythms and melodies with electronics and Urban beats. I also have a deep experience working for theater group Fuerza Bruta for many years, so I put that concept in my own music too, describing landscapes with the music.
Q3. What instrumental are you playing to produce music and live?
I use different traditional instruments, like Charango (a little kind of guitar from northwest Argentina and Bolivia) traditional percussion, flutes and so to build the andean atmosphere in my productions together with electronic beats and sounds. Talking about the live show it is more simple than that because it includes dance as well so it is not supported just by my performance playing.
I sing, play percussion and flutes.
Q4. What inspired you to release your album "Tierra de King Coya" on ZZK records?
"Tierra de King Coya" is a journey, it contains a couple of tracks that I had from years ago (that are out of the main concept of "Folk music for the dance floor" but describes other aspects of my music).
It also shows collaborations with other artists like La Walichera, La yegros, and Iara Nardi who sings live in the show as well.
Q5. What are you up to next?
The show with "Queen Cholas" is going through a developing process, after being working with them for 3 years we are looking for make it better for next year before going back to tour.
Also working in new tracks for my next album.
